Surplus Production

Since April 2010 'Feed-in-tariffs' have been paid for all electricity generated by renewable systems (e.g. wind, solar pv, microhydro) at different rates depending on the type and size of the installation. These payments are made even if the power is used at source and not 'exported' to the grid.

All power exported is paid 3p/kWh. However by direct negotiation with power generating companies (such as Good Energy) you may be able to obtain a slightly higher rate.

Battery Storage or Heat Production

  • Useful for areas where there is no grid connection available to store excess electricity for later use
  • Several large (ideally deep cycle) batteries required & possibly an inverter
  • Surplus power can also be used to power an electric heater.
