New regulations came into force in 2009 to encourage battery recycling.  Manufacturers and retailers will have to offer collection points for spent batteries. There have been trials rolled out over some areas in Scotland and the UK and there should soon be a national recovery programme in place for these items. For further information click here.

From 1st February 2010 retailers who sell more than 32kg of portable batteries and accumulators each year will have the responsibility to take them back in-store. For more info:

Permits can either be applied for when completing the Yearly Refuse Application, or in retrospect.

Composting Food Waste

We waste food – a lot of it, every day - An incredible amount of the food we buy never passes our lips but goes straight to landfill, with much of it never even having been taken out of its packaging.

Food waste is a huge issue that needs to be tackled. Recent studies estimate that we throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food every year most of which could have been eaten. Love Food Hate Waste is a campaign that provides useful information to help avoid waste food. www.lovefoodhatewaste.org

In the future the most likely destination for our waste food will be anaerobic digesters. These are sealed vessels in which biodegradable waste is broken down by bacteria. The bacteria produce biogas, which has a number of uses:

  • generate heat and power
  • motor fuel
  • bio fertiliser

This has the benefit of saving huge amounts of energy and cutting CO2 emissions.

The best way to tackle uncooked food waste is by home composting.
All that is required is a suitable container to hold the waste, and an area of unsurfaced ground to site the bin.

There are subsidised bins on offer on the Highland Councils Website click here to buy.

REMEMBER - Waste Prevention is best!

  • Buy only what you need – stop buying clothes and food that will get thrown away
  • Buy food loose rather packaged – buy meat from a butcher, veg from the Farm Shop etc.
  • Compost organic materials (kitchen vegetable scraps)
  • Avoid disposable products
  • Repair damaged goods
  • Reuse – jars and plastic bottles
  • Give away, sell or donate unwanted toys or clothes to charity shops
  • Hire things like DVD’s rather than buy
  • Use cotton or jute bags instead of plastic ones or reuse plastic bags
