Community Composting AwardsPress Release August 2009 Compost Benefits Communities Lochaber Environmental Group is making donations to the four communities where community composting sites are operating. A total of £1,000 is being awarded to the communities who have participated in making the sites work. The recipients have been decided by the compost sites.
Acharacle, Kinlochleven, Glencoe and Strontian all have sites where the local community can put garden waste for composting. This saves emissions to environment from transport and landfill and allows us to make the most of useful resources locally. Locally made compost can be used as a mulch and to improve long term health of the soil. The sites each have someone paid for a few hours a week and depend on volunteer labour to help run them. Costs are met by the Highland Council as the sites contribute towards Council targets on diverting waste from landfill. In 2008-09 a total of 68T was collected and composted.
